FANSHEN
By David Hare

Set in rural China between 1945 and 1949,
Fanshen is a detailed portrait of the changes
the revolution wrought upon the village of Long Bow.

The word Fanshen literally means
“to turn the body”, or “to turn over”.

To China’s hundreds of millions of landless and land-poor peasants,
it meant to stand up, to throw off the landlord yoke,
to gain land, stock, implements and houses.

It meant to enter a new world.
