A message from the committee
On behalf of the Trap for a Lonely Man cast and crew, thank you to everyone who came to see the show and responded so well to it. We had a wonderful time rehearsing and performing it and hope all the audience members enjoyed it as much as we did. Unfortunately, we arrived at the theatre on Saturday evening to find the entire week’s takings and bar/box office floats had been taken from the safe. The amount taken means we have made a massive loss on this show. Last year’s dark period before the Christmas show meant we were financially hurt but this means we have effectively paid out for a show (rights, show costs etc) and made a loss from staging it, making the effect even worse than if we had not had a show at all.

The money was taken from a locked safe which was behind three locked doors. The safe needs a combination to open it, and the thief would have to have had keys to both the front door and dressing room, known where the office key is kept and known the safe combination. This points to the thief being someone who has had access to keys and the combination in the past and had knowledge of the building and the way the Green is run.

We are all deeply saddened that a. the money was taken in the first place, and b. that it was taken by someone we possibly know, or who has spent time at the Green and knows the financial hardship the theatre faces every year. It leaves the current committee in an awkward position, having to discuss who the thief might have been and speculate over old friends. However we believe they were an ex member, possibly committee member. We have contacted the police who are going to dust for fingerprints and interview the neighbours, but this message is really to appeal to whoever might have taken the money and ask that you please return it. The theatre has always struggled and still does, and a blow like this undoes every committee’s hard work over the past twenty plus years. We are now in a frustrating position, wanting to do a lot of work to the building in order to keep the company here, which we have not always been able to afford. This work will now have to be pushed back even further, affecting everything from the artistic calendar to essential electrics work, ultimately compromising the GTC’s residency at Barton Green Theatre.

A member of the committee will check the post every day next week, in the hope that whoever did this sees this message and has the decency to give the money back. Hopefully then we will not have to undergo further police enquiries if the money is returned to us through the letterbox. The police will potentially be contacting ex-members about this. If you are contacted, please do not take it as an accusation, simply us providing them with a list of all those who may have had access to the building in the past. We also would like to thank those who attended the show on Saturday night and gave donation¬¬s as we didn’t have any change! We plan to install working CCTV throughout the building and change the locks, which we couldn’t afford before but is now a necessity, in a hope to deter this thief who has struck in the past as well. Any more donations would be incredibly gratefully received.

If you have any information on the matter or would like to make a donation to our CCTV and security fund, please contact us on 02089420155 or via bartongreentheatre@hotmail

Thank you,
